Importance of Oral Cancer Screenings

April 27, 2018

Smiling woman in dental chair talking to dentistOral cancer is one of the most deadly forms of cancer. It can affect patients of all ages, and contrary to popular belief, it is not limited to impacting the health of tobacco users. When a disease claims at least one life every hour and has a 50% mortality rate five years after diagnosis, it’s important that patients and doctors alike do their part to limit the impact of this disease. That’s why April has been dedicated oral cancer awareness month. We encourage patients to receive a screening for this deadly disease at least twice a year during dental checkups, and April is a good time to educate patients about the need for regular oral cancer assessments.

Invisalign® for Beautiful Smiles in Highland Village, TX

May 10, 2015

Shutterstock InvisalignThere just seems to be more things to smile about during summer. The get togethers with family and friends, the slower pace, and the fun outdoor activities such as baseball games, pool parties and picnics. If crooked teeth keep you from openly smiling, then consider Invisalign from Dr. Ryan C. Thomas at Highland Village Family Dentistry in Highland Village, TX. Straighten your teeth this summer with Invisalign and you’ll be ready to smile from ear to ear next summer.

Invisalign is perfect for adults who want to straighten their teeth with orthodontics, but don’t want the look of traditional metal brackets and wires. Why is Invisalign perfect? Because Invisalign, as the name suggests, straightens almost invisibly. With clear plastic BPA-free aligners, Invisalign gradually moves your teeth into proper alignment and hardly anyone will notice the process. Moreover, without the hassle and irritation of metal, you’ll hardly notice these clear braces in your mouth. And when it’s time to eat or brush and floss your teeth, simply remove the aligners.

Invisalign Highland Village Trusts

Dr. Thomas is well-experienced in orthodontic treatment with Invisalign. If you and he decide that Invisalign is right for you, then we will begin treatment by taking impressions, photos and x-rays of your teeth. These are sent to the Invisalign lab, which develops a 3-D image of your teeth and your bite. Dr. Thomas uses this to develop a treatment plan that will show you the results of your treatment before you even begin.

You’re custom designed aligners arrive as a series of sets, one for your upper arch and one for the lower. Wear each set for about two weeks and then move on to the next set. As you advance through the series, you’ll begin to see your teeth move into their proper position. In about a year, you’ll have the straight smile you’ve always wanted. So with Invisalign, Flower Mound can be smiling pretty next summer!

The Success behind a Smile: Studies Show Surprising Benefits of Cosmetic Dentistry

April 10, 2015

ThinkstockPhotos-Couple with VeneersThe world of cosmetic dentistry encompasses everything one needs to enjoy a radiant, attractive smile, and the industry only continues to grow as more Americans take the appearance of their teeth into their own hands. If misaligned teeth or deep discoloration plague your smile, you no longer have to stand idly by and “get used to it.” You do have the power to alter the appearance of your teeth and, with today’s most advanced cosmetic dentistry technology, Dr. Ryan Thomas and the team at Highland Village Family Dentistry can help.

What the Studies Say about Beautiful Teeth

According to numerous studies conducted over the past few years, a beautiful smile makes more of an impression than we once thought. Men and women with straight, white teeth are perceived as more successful, for instance, and thought to exude more confidence than those with teeth that are crooked, stained, or both. In fact, Americans estimated that individuals with bright, attractive smiles were 10 percent more likely to land a good job and 58 percent more apt to be wealthy. In addition, those with straight teeth are anticipated to be 57 percent more likely to be invited out on a date based upon a photograph alone.

Other attributes associated with a beautiful smile include:

  • Intelligence
  • Friendliness
  • Outgoing personality
  • Trustworthiness
  • Popularity
  • Good health

Because we believe that each and every one of our patients deserves only the best that cosmetic dentistry has to offer, our comprehensive menu of services includes the latest in aesthetic dental technology, including Invisalign clear aligners, Fastbraces, teeth whitening, cosmetic bonding, and porcelain veneers.

Reserve Your Consultation

If you’ve always wanted a more attractive smile, or if you’re interested in learning more about your cosmetic dentistry options, please give us a call today to schedule a consultation with Dr. Thomas. We look forward to the opportunity to sit down with you to discuss your goals and expectations so that we can develop a cosmetic treatment plan just for you. The Simple Test that May Save Your Life: Oral Cancer Screening in Highland Village, TX

March 23, 2015

ThinkstockPhotos-178361153Next month is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, and we’d like to take some time today to discuss the importance of oral cancer screening at Highland Village Family Dentistry. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, approximately 43,250 men and women in America will be newly diagnosed in 2015. Only about half of those diagnosed will go on to live for another five years. Fortunately, oral cancer screening does help. With testing and treatment for this life-threatening condition, dentists and oral surgeons are helping mitigate the impact of oral cancer every year.

Common Symptoms of Oral Cancer

One of the most dangerous aspects of oral cancer is that it can go unnoticed for months before it begins causing visible or tactile symptoms. This is why screening is such a significant facet of general and preventive dentistry. When symptoms do appear, they typically include one or more of the following:

  • Sores anywhere in the mouth that do not heal after two weeks
  • Difficulty speaking, chewing, or swallowing
  • Any odd sensations, such as numbness, tingling, or persistent hoarseness
  • Unexplained bleeding
  • Lumps or a thickening of tissue anywhere in the mouth
  • The appearance of white and/or red patches, frequently found under the tongue or along the lining of the cheeks

It is important to remember that oral cancer is most successfully managed when detected and treated in its earliest stages. Because the first signs of this aggressive disease are often difficult or impossible to see by yourself, oral cancer screenings with your Highland Village dentist are critical to continued oral health and overall wellness.

Schedule Your Oral Cancer Screening Today

The American Dental Association recommends that a thorough oral cancer screening be performed at least once per year during a periodic oral exam. If, of course, you notice any of the above symptoms or any other abnormalities, please do not hesitate to contact our office to schedule an appointment with Dr. Thomas. Our team genuinely looks forward to providing you with exceptional care in a warm and welcoming office environment that makes you feel right at home.

Conveniently located in Highland Village, TX, our family-friendly dental practice is privileged to serve patients from throughout the surrounding areas, including Frisco, Plano, Prosper, Flower Mound, The Colony, Argyle, Lantana, and beyond.

Stop Snoring & Get the Rest You Deserve with Sleep Apnea Therapy in Highland Village, TX

February 23, 2015

460137233It is estimated that nearly 50 percent of adults snore, but just because it’s so common doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t be addressed. Excessive snoring is one of the clearest indicators that an even more serious problem exists: obstructive sleep apnea. While loud snoring may cause a rift between you and your sleeping partner, OSA can lead to a variety of potentially life-threatening health conditions when left untreated. Fortunately, Dr. Ryan Thomas and the team at Highland Village Family Dentistry can help with non-invasive, proven-effective sleep apnea therapy.

The Importance of Treating Sleep Apnea

When a person suffers from sleep apnea, their breathing ceases for seconds to minutes at a time; this can occur 30 or more times per hour. The body and brain are deprived of oxygen repeatedly, a very serious complication that can lead to a variety of health concerns over time, including:

  • High blood pressure
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Heart attack
  • Atrial fibrillation
  • Chronic fatigue, which may contribute to accidents at work or on the road
  • Inhibited liver function
  • Seizures
  • Eye problems, including glaucoma

With sleep apnea therapy at Highland Village Family Dentistry, Dr. Thomas can help you not only stop snoring, but reduce your chances of developing these and other apnea-related conditions.

Finally Get a Good Night’s Sleep

If you or your partner snores at night and you’re concerned about sleep apnea, please don’t hesitate to contact us today to schedule a visit with Dr. Thomas. We genuinely look forward to helping you overcome obstructive sleep apnea and snoring, allowing you to enjoy the peaceful, rejuvenating sleep you need and deserve. Feel more energized in the morning, and rest assured in the knowledge that you’re lowering your risk for severe complications with a sleep apnea treatment plan that’s easy to follow.
