Importance of Oral Cancer Screenings

April 27, 2018

Smiling woman in dental chair talking to dentistOral cancer is one of the most deadly forms of cancer. It can affect patients of all ages, and contrary to popular belief, it is not limited to impacting the health of tobacco users. When a disease claims at least one life every hour and has a 50% mortality rate five years after diagnosis, it’s important that patients and doctors alike do their part to limit the impact of this disease. That’s why April has been dedicated oral cancer awareness month. We encourage patients to receive a screening for this deadly disease at least twice a year during dental checkups, and April is a good time to educate patients about the need for regular oral cancer assessments.

Getting Braces as an Adult: What are My Options?

July 27, 2015

177000598If you missed the chance to have braces when you were a kid, then you are mistaken to think that as an adult the opportunity has passed. To the contrary, more adult Americans are getting braces later in life than ever before. The only question is what kind of orthodontics are best for you. Dr. Ryan Thomas of Highland Village Family Dentistry is a general dentist who performs complete orthodontics. So, when it comes to either dentistry or orthodontics, Highland Village, TX, counts on Dr. Thomas.

Adult braces can be used to correct a number of dental problems, whether they are cosmetic or detrimental to your bite. They include:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Overcrowded teeth
  • Bite abnormalities, including either an overbite or an underbite
  • Problems with your jaw position
  • Jaw joint problems

In some instances, ignoring these problems can lead to a greater risk of cavities, gum, or periodontal, disease, ear pain, headaches, and chewing and speech problems. Therefore, having braces may not only enhance the appearance of your smile, but your overall oral health, as well.

Options for Orthodontics Flower Mound Will Smile About

Traditional metal braces are always a viable option for orthodontic patients of any age. Conventional metal braces necessitate attaching metal brackets and wires to your teeth. The braces are periodically adjusted in order to apply pressure to your teeth in such a way that they move into proper position. At Highland Village Family Dentistry, we use all-digital orthodontics. Using modern dental technology, wires are custom made just for you. With traditional orthodontics, the wires are pre-fabricated and the orthodontist chooses the one that best suits you. With digital orthodontics, however, you get more efficient treatment and better results because the wire are custom made for your particular orthodontic case.

Invisalign®

Clear acrylic aligners from Invisalign are custom-fitted, removable braces that are placed over your teeth. The major advantages are that aligners are almost invisible and are easier to clean than braces because they can be removed during eating. And while Dr. Thomas will want you to wear your Ivisalign clean plastic braces for the better part of the day every day, you can remove them for a special occasion.

Dr. Thomas works in conjunction with the Invisalign lab to develop a customized treatment plan. You will wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, and then put on a new pair to further adjust your teeth. Most people need to wear their Invisalign braces for 12 to 24 months.

Invisalign® for Beautiful Smiles in Highland Village, TX

May 10, 2015

Shutterstock InvisalignThere just seems to be more things to smile about during summer. The get togethers with family and friends, the slower pace, and the fun outdoor activities such as baseball games, pool parties and picnics. If crooked teeth keep you from openly smiling, then consider Invisalign from Dr. Ryan C. Thomas at Highland Village Family Dentistry in Highland Village, TX. Straighten your teeth this summer with Invisalign and you’ll be ready to smile from ear to ear next summer.

Invisalign is perfect for adults who want to straighten their teeth with orthodontics, but don’t want the look of traditional metal brackets and wires. Why is Invisalign perfect? Because Invisalign, as the name suggests, straightens almost invisibly. With clear plastic BPA-free aligners, Invisalign gradually moves your teeth into proper alignment and hardly anyone will notice the process. Moreover, without the hassle and irritation of metal, you’ll hardly notice these clear braces in your mouth. And when it’s time to eat or brush and floss your teeth, simply remove the aligners.

Invisalign Highland Village Trusts

Dr. Thomas is well-experienced in orthodontic treatment with Invisalign. If you and he decide that Invisalign is right for you, then we will begin treatment by taking impressions, photos and x-rays of your teeth. These are sent to the Invisalign lab, which develops a 3-D image of your teeth and your bite. Dr. Thomas uses this to develop a treatment plan that will show you the results of your treatment before you even begin.

You’re custom designed aligners arrive as a series of sets, one for your upper arch and one for the lower. Wear each set for about two weeks and then move on to the next set. As you advance through the series, you’ll begin to see your teeth move into their proper position. In about a year, you’ll have the straight smile you’ve always wanted. So with Invisalign, Flower Mound can be smiling pretty next summer!
