The Simple Test that May Save Your Life: Oral Cancer Screening in Highland Village, TX

March 23, 2015

ThinkstockPhotos-178361153Next month is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, and we’d like to take some time today to discuss the importance of oral cancer screening at Highland Village Family Dentistry. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, approximately 43,250 men and women in America will be newly diagnosed in 2015. Only about half of those diagnosed will go on to live for another five years. Fortunately, oral cancer screening does help. With testing and treatment for this life-threatening condition, dentists and oral surgeons are helping mitigate the impact of oral cancer every year.

Common Symptoms of Oral Cancer

One of the most dangerous aspects of oral cancer is that it can go unnoticed for months before it begins causing visible or tactile symptoms. This is why screening is such a significant facet of general and preventive dentistry. When symptoms do appear, they typically include one or more of the following:

  • Sores anywhere in the mouth that do not heal after two weeks
  • Difficulty speaking, chewing, or swallowing
  • Any odd sensations, such as numbness, tingling, or persistent hoarseness
  • Unexplained bleeding
  • Lumps or a thickening of tissue anywhere in the mouth
  • The appearance of white and/or red patches, frequently found under the tongue or along the lining of the cheeks

It is important to remember that oral cancer is most successfully managed when detected and treated in its earliest stages. Because the first signs of this aggressive disease are often difficult or impossible to see by yourself, oral cancer screenings with your Highland Village dentist are critical to continued oral health and overall wellness.

Schedule Your Oral Cancer Screening Today

The American Dental Association recommends that a thorough oral cancer screening be performed at least once per year during a periodic oral exam. Stop Snoring & Get the Rest You Deserve with Sleep Apnea Therapy in Highland Village, TX

February 23, 2015

460137233It is estimated that nearly 50 percent of adults snore, but just because it’s so common doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t be addressed. Excessive snoring is one of the clearest indicators that an even more serious problem exists: obstructive sleep apnea. While loud snoring may cause a rift between you and your sleeping partner, OSA can lead to a variety of potentially life-threatening health conditions when left untreated. Fortunately, Dr. Ryan Thomas and the team at Highland Village Family Dentistry can help with non-invasive, proven-effective sleep apnea therapy.

The Importance of Treating Sleep Apnea

When a person suffers from sleep apnea, their breathing ceases for seconds to minutes at a time; this can occur 30 or more times per hour. The body and brain are deprived of oxygen repeatedly, a very serious complication that can lead to a variety of health concerns over time, including:

  • High blood pressure
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Heart attack
  • Atrial fibrillation
  • Chronic fatigue, which may contribute to accidents at work or on the road
  • Inhibited liver function
  • Seizures
  • Eye problems, including glaucoma

With sleep apnea therapy at Highland Village Family Dentistry, Dr. Thomas can help you not only stop snoring, but reduce your chances of developing these and other apnea-related conditions.

Finally Get a Good Night’s Sleep

If you or your partner snores at night and you’re concerned about sleep apnea, please don’t hesitate to contact us today to schedule a visit with Dr. Thomas. We genuinely look forward to helping you overcome obstructive sleep apnea and snoring, allowing you to enjoy the peaceful, rejuvenating sleep you need and deserve. Celebrate National Children’s Dental Health Month with Dr. Ryan Thomas

February 10, 2015

177817150Every February, the American Dental Association sponsors National Children’s Dental Health Month (NCDHM), and our team thinks there’s no better time to emphasize the significance of pediatric dental care. Tooth decay is the most prevalent chronic childhood disease in America, but we can help prevent it. At Highland Village Family Dentistry in Highland Village, TX, Dr. Ryan Thomas and his caring, experienced staff offer a wide range of general dentistry services, including children’s dental care.

Forging a Solid Foundation for Future Smiles

Children who visit the dentist beginning at a young age tend to experience fewer oral health concerns as adolescents and adults. This is largely due to the fact that a good dental hygiene schedule sets the stage for pleasant experiences at the dentist’s office in the future. At your child’s first appointment, Dr. Thomas and his friendly team will ensure that he or she feels completely comfortable from the moment you walk in. Our practice is built upon the fundamental values of trust, family, and high-quality care, and we’re sure that you’ll be able to feel the difference; our practice is unlike any other in that we truly do treat each of our patients like family.

Your child’s dental health is a critical component of his or her overall wellbeing. Because tooth decay can lead to severe pain and damage if not treated promptly, it is important to schedule a routine dental checkup for your son or daughter at least once every six months. These visits not only help to keep little pearly whites clean, but also allow our team to catch small problems before they become more severe.

Schedule Your Child’s Dental Health Visit

Has it been more than six months since the last time your child visited our office? Perhaps you’re searching for the best children’s dentist in DFW and the surrounding areas, and this will be your first visit to our practice. Whether you are a new patient or have trusted Dr. Thomas for your child’s dental care for years, we can’t wait to see you. Contact us today to schedule your appointment, and learn more about what makes our practice stand out from the crowd when it comes to gently and properly caring for your child’s oral health. Athletes and Oral Health: Why Do Runners Have More Cavities?

January 23, 2015

78459279A regular fitness regimen is a vital component of any healthy lifestyle, but do you know how your time at the gym impacts your oral health? At Highland Village Family Dentistry in Highland Village, TX, Dr. Ryan Thomas and his team encourage all of our patients to live as healthily as possible, and this includes offering patient education regarding all aspects of oral health. Today, we’d like to take a moment to share the results of an interesting study recently published in a Scandinavian scientific journal about the link between exercise and tooth decay.

Incidence of Tooth Decay Higher in Runners

According to a 2014 study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports, athletes (particularly runners) tend to have more cases of tooth decay and enamel erosion than non-athletes. One of the primary reasons for this is diet; athletes commonly consume foods and beverages that are high in carbohydrates. A high-carb diet has been linked to a reduced pH level in the mouth, an issue that leads to an increased risk for cavities.

Another common concern for athletes is decreased production of saliva. Saliva protects the teeth from acidic bacteria, and when there isn’t enough saliva in the mouth, tooth decay risk increases. Because most runners tend to breathe through their mouths, the problem is compounded in situations of strenuous exercise.

While we would certainly never advise that our athletic patients abstain from their regular fitness routines, we do recommend that those who run regularly see Dr. Thomas for general dentistry checkups and thorough cleanings.

Special Dental Care for Athletes

At Highland Village Family Dentistry, our team places an immense amount of emphasis on not only your oral health, but your overall physical wellness, too. That’s why we are always happy to talk with you about ways to improve the health of your smile in a way that benefits your general well-being.

If you are an athlete and you are curious as to how your workout routine may be affecting your oral health, please don’t hesitate to contact us today to schedule a visit with Dr. Thomas and our team. We can develop a treatment strategy that is customized to suit your unique needs in a way that complements your lifestyle. Our Highland Village, TX dental office warmly welcomes families from nearby communities in North Dallas, including Lantana, Flower Mound, Lewisville, Argyle, Plano, Frisco, The Colony, and more.

Finding Relief from Migraines and Chronic Jaw Pain with TMJ Disorder Treatment

January 10, 2015

462039415Do you suffer from frequent headaches and constant pain in your neck, jaw, and face? Have you ever woken up in the morning to a throbbing ache in your temples? These are among the most common symptoms of a condition called temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ disorder. Dr. Ryan Thomas and the team at Highland Village Family Dentistry provide families in Highland Village, TX and beyond with a variety of general dentistry solutions, including TMJ disorder treatment.

Understanding TMJ Disorder & Treatment

According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, approximately 5 to 12 percent of the adult population suffers from TMJ disorder, and women are twice as likely to be affected as men. Also referred to as TMJ dysfunction, this condition is characterized by a disorder of the joints that connect the jaw to the skull. These tiny, triangular joints allow you to open and close your mouth, move your jaw from side to side, and chew effectively.

When these delicate joints are damaged or misaligned for any reason, the nerve endings and muscles the surround them can cause immense pain that radiates throughout the face, neck, head, shoulders, and back. While over-the-counter pain relief medications can offer some respite, correcting the underlying cause of the symptoms is the only way to achieve lasting relief. Dr. Thomas will thoroughly assess your jaw and teeth to determine the reason for your TMJ disorder, offering his insight and counsel regarding your unique case. We may recommend an oral appliance (often called a nightguard or an oral splint) to prevent further damage to the joints, muscles, and teeth. If malocclusion is the cause of your TMJ disorder, we do offer orthodontic treatment as well.

Schedule Your Consultation Today

If you or a member of your family is affected by TMJ disorder and you’re ready to find lasting relief, our team is here to help. With the most advanced technology in the industry and a genuinely caring approach to dentistry, Dr. Thomas is your premier destination for TMJ therapy in the North Dallas area. Our state-of-the-art dental office in Highland Village, TX is privileged to serve the oral healthcare needs of families in Plano, Frisco, The Colony, Lantana, Argyle, Flower Mound, and beyond. Dental Implants: Welcome the New Year with a New Smile!

December 23, 2014

151545340According to the American College of Prosthodontists, approximately 178 million men and women in the United States are missing at least one of their natural teeth. Of these, an estimated 37 million are completely edentulous (missing all of their teeth). If you are missing one or more teeth, the team at Highland Village Family Dentistry invites you to make a unique type of resolution this New Year’s Eve. As 2015 begins, why not take this opportunity to begin a new chapter in your life with a completely revitalized smile? With dental implants, Dr. Ryan Thomas and his team can make repairing your smile easier than you may expect.

Dental Implants for a Gorgeous Smile in 2015

If you are missing even a single tooth, you understand what an impact this common oral health issue can have on your daily life. If the missing tooth shows when you smile or speak, you may feel less inclined to share your true self and personality with those who matter most. Even if you are missing a molar near the back of your mouth, it may prove exceedingly difficult to chew the foods you need to enjoy a healthy and happy life. If not replaced in a timely manner, a missing tooth can lead to the deterioration of jaw bone tissue. This may subsequently result in the loss of additional teeth.

Fortunately, it is possible to halt the loss of bone tissue with a restorative dentistry option that mimics the function of your natural teeth: dental implants. With a tiny titanium post, Dr. Thomas and his trusted team of implant specialists can effectively replace one or more missing teeth in a way that looks and feels completely natural. A custom crown, bridge, or denture is then attached to the biocompatible dental implant, thereby completing the process of total tooth replacement. You’ll love your new smile, an invaluable asset you’ll enjoy not only throughout 2015 but for years and years to come.

Have you been considering dentures, a bridge, or another restorative option as a solution to your missing teeth? Allow the team at Highland Village Family Dentistry to help. How Periodontal Therapy Can Save Your Smile from Gum Disease

November 23, 2014

185780257It is estimated that approximately half of American men and women suffer from some form of periodontal disease, a severe oral health condition that can lead to a variety of complications if not treated properly. Unfortunately, many patients with early stage gum disease aren’t even aware that they are affected. At Highland Village Family Dentistry, Dr. Ryan Thomas and his caring hygiene team help patients from Highland Village, TX and the surrounding areas keep their teeth and gums healthy with general dentistry solutions, including periodontal therapy.

Causes and Risk Factor for Gum Disease

The primary cause of gum disease is poor oral hygiene. Failure to remove plaque with proper brushing and flossing leads to an accumulation of bacteria between teeth and along the gum line. This is one of the many reasons that routine prophylaxis (professional dental cleaning) is so important. Other risk factors include smoking and certain medications. Ask your primary care physician about any medications you are prescribed and any oral health effects they may have.

How Periodontal Therapy Helps

Periodontal therapy works by eradicating the bacteria that cause chronic infection within the gingival tissues and underlying bone. Though periodontal disease cannot be reversed completely, it is possible to halt the progression of the infection so as to avoid further damage. Dr. Thomas will always take the time to sit down with you to discuss your unique needs and all of your options, developing a gum disease treatment plan that is specifically formulated for you. With periodontal therapy, it is possible to reduce your risk of tooth loss and other conditions associated with gum disease, including heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and more.

Schedule Your Consultation Today

Whether you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease or you’d simply like to learn more about the ways you can prevent it, Dr. Thomas and his caring, experienced team are here to help.
