Stop Snoring & Get the Rest You Deserve with Sleep Apnea Therapy in Highland Village, TX

February 23, 2015

460137233It is estimated that nearly 50 percent of adults snore, but just because it’s so common doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t be addressed. Excessive snoring is one of the clearest indicators that an even more serious problem exists: obstructive sleep apnea. While loud snoring may cause a rift between you and your sleeping partner, OSA can lead to a variety of potentially life-threatening health conditions when left untreated. Fortunately, Dr. Ryan Thomas and the team at Highland Village Family Dentistry can help with non-invasive, proven-effective sleep apnea therapy.

The Importance of Treating Sleep Apnea

When a person suffers from sleep apnea, their breathing ceases for seconds to minutes at a time; this can occur 30 or more times per hour. The body and brain are deprived of oxygen repeatedly, a very serious complication that can lead to a variety of health concerns over time, including:

  • High blood pressure
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Heart attack
  • Atrial fibrillation
  • Chronic fatigue, which may contribute to accidents at work or on the road
  • Inhibited liver function
  • Seizures
  • Eye problems, including glaucoma

With sleep apnea therapy at Highland Village Family Dentistry, Dr. Thomas can help you not only stop snoring, but reduce your chances of developing these and other apnea-related conditions.

Finally Get a Good Night’s Sleep

If you or your partner snores at night and you’re concerned about sleep apnea, please don’t hesitate to contact us today to schedule a visit with Dr. Thomas. We genuinely look forward to helping you overcome obstructive sleep apnea and snoring, allowing you to enjoy the peaceful, rejuvenating sleep you need and deserve. Feel more energized in the morning, and rest assured in the knowledge that you’re lowering your risk for severe complications with a sleep apnea treatment plan that’s easy to follow. Celebrate National Children’s Dental Health Month with Dr. Ryan Thomas

February 10, 2015

177817150Every February, the American Dental Association sponsors National Children’s Dental Health Month (NCDHM), and our team thinks there’s no better time to emphasize the significance of pediatric dental care. Tooth decay is the most prevalent chronic childhood disease in America, but we can help prevent it. At Highland Village Family Dentistry in Highland Village, TX, Dr. Ryan Thomas and his caring, experienced staff offer a wide range of general dentistry services, including children’s dental care.

Forging a Solid Foundation for Future Smiles

Children who visit the dentist beginning at a young age tend to experience fewer oral health concerns as adolescents and adults. This is largely due to the fact that a good dental hygiene schedule sets the stage for pleasant experiences at the dentist’s office in the future. At your child’s first appointment, Dr. Thomas and his friendly team will ensure that he or she feels completely comfortable from the moment you walk in. Our practice is built upon the fundamental values of trust, family, and high-quality care, and we’re sure that you’ll be able to feel the difference; our practice is unlike any other in that we truly do treat each of our patients like family.

Your child’s dental health is a critical component of his or her overall wellbeing. Because tooth decay can lead to severe pain and damage if not treated promptly, it is important to schedule a routine dental checkup for your son or daughter at least once every six months. These visits not only help to keep little pearly whites clean, but also allow our team to catch small problems before they become more severe.

Schedule Your Child’s Dental Health Visit

Has it been more than six months since the last time your child visited our office? Perhaps you’re searching for the best children’s dentist in DFW and the surrounding areas, and this will be your first visit to our practice. Whether you are a new patient or have trusted Dr. Thomas for your child’s dental care for years, we can’t wait to see you. Contact us today to schedule your appointment, and learn more about what makes our practice stand out from the crowd when it comes to gently and properly caring for your child’s oral health. Athletes and Oral Health: Why Do Runners Have More Cavities?

January 23, 2015

78459279A regular fitness regimen is a vital component of any healthy lifestyle, but do you know how your time at the gym impacts your oral health? At Highland Village Family Dentistry in Highland Village, TX, Dr. Ryan Thomas and his team encourage all of our patients to live as healthily as possible, and this includes offering patient education regarding all aspects of oral health. Today, we’d like to take a moment to share the results of an interesting study recently published in a Scandinavian scientific journal about the link between exercise and tooth decay.

Incidence of Tooth Decay Higher in Runners

According to a 2014 study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports, athletes (particularly runners) tend to have more cases of tooth decay and enamel erosion than non-athletes. One of the primary reasons for this is diet; athletes commonly consume foods and beverages that are high in carbohydrates. A high-carb diet has been linked to a reduced pH level in the mouth, an issue that leads to an increased risk for cavities.

Another common concern for athletes is decreased production of saliva. Saliva protects the teeth from acidic bacteria, and when there isn’t enough saliva in the mouth, tooth decay risk increases. Because most runners tend to breathe through their mouths, the problem is compounded in situations of strenuous exercise.

While we would certainly never advise that our athletic patients abstain from their regular fitness routines, we do recommend that those who run regularly see Dr. Thomas for general dentistry checkups and thorough cleanings.

Special Dental Care for Athletes

At Highland Village Family Dentistry, our team places an immense amount of emphasis on not only your oral health, but your overall physical wellness, too. That’s why we are always happy to talk with you about ways to improve the health of your smile in a way that benefits your general well-being.

If you are an athlete and you are curious as to how your workout routine may be affecting your oral health, please don’t hesitate to contact us today to schedule a visit with Dr. Thomas and our team. We can develop a treatment strategy that is customized to suit your unique needs in a way that complements your lifestyle. Our Highland Village, TX dental office warmly welcomes families from nearby communities in North Dallas, including Lantana, Flower Mound, Lewisville, Argyle, Plano, Frisco, The Colony, and more.

Finding Relief from Migraines and Chronic Jaw Pain with TMJ Disorder Treatment

January 10, 2015

462039415Do you suffer from frequent headaches and constant pain in your neck, jaw, and face? Have you ever woken up in the morning to a throbbing ache in your temples? These are among the most common symptoms of a condition called temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ disorder. Dr. Ryan Thomas and the team at Highland Village Family Dentistry provide families in Highland Village, TX and beyond with a variety of general dentistry solutions, including TMJ disorder treatment.

Understanding TMJ Disorder & Treatment

According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, approximately 5 to 12 percent of the adult population suffers from TMJ disorder, and women are twice as likely to be affected as men. Also referred to as TMJ dysfunction, this condition is characterized by a disorder of the joints that connect the jaw to the skull. These tiny, triangular joints allow you to open and close your mouth, move your jaw from side to side, and chew effectively.

When these delicate joints are damaged or misaligned for any reason, the nerve endings and muscles the surround them can cause immense pain that radiates throughout the face, neck, head, shoulders, and back. While over-the-counter pain relief medications can offer some respite, correcting the underlying cause of the symptoms is the only way to achieve lasting relief. Dr. Thomas will thoroughly assess your jaw and teeth to determine the reason for your TMJ disorder, offering his insight and counsel regarding your unique case. We may recommend an oral appliance (often called a nightguard or an oral splint) to prevent further damage to the joints, muscles, and teeth. If malocclusion is the cause of your TMJ disorder, we do offer orthodontic treatment as well.

Schedule Your Consultation Today

If you or a member of your family is affected by TMJ disorder and you’re ready to find lasting relief, our team is here to help. With the most advanced technology in the industry and a genuinely caring approach to dentistry, Dr. Thomas is your premier destination for TMJ therapy in the North Dallas area. Our state-of-the-art dental office in Highland Village, TX is privileged to serve the oral healthcare needs of families in Plano, Frisco, The Colony, Lantana, Argyle, Flower Mound, and beyond. Before Eating a Halloween Treat, Make Sure Your Child and Dentist Meet!

October 24, 2014

89793530Ask kids what they’re doing for Halloween and you’re likely to hear all about the costumes they’re planning to wear, the friends they’ll be trick-or-treating with, and the candy they will eat. And eat. And eat. Stop right there, please. A fun evening can quickly become a spooky nightmare if the candy gets out of hand. With this in mind, children’s dentist Dr. Ryan Thomas of Highland Village Family Dentistry in Highland Village, TX, offers the following tips for making sure your children’s teeth stay boootiful and healthy this Halloween.

  1. Make sure your children’s dental check-ups are up-to-date. Like you, they should see Dr. Thomas once every six months for a professional cleaning and exam. And children’s teeth can be helped by fluoride treatments and sealants, in particular. Sealants are plastic coatings that are “painted” on molars to protect them from bacteria that causes tooth decay.
  2. Make a candy eating schedule and stick to it! If possible, don’t let the kids eat candy for snacks. Save the candy for mealtime when other foods are eaten, too. Plaque loves the acid that sweet treats produce. But when we eat other foods, the additional saliva in the mouth breaks down the sugars more rapidly, thus decreasing the amount of acid produced.
  3. When you check the kids’ candy, set aside the pieces that seem too hard or too chewy for little teeth. And if those teeth have braces, then it’s all the more important to make sure the candy they eat won’t damage their braces or their teeth.
  4. Chewing sugar-free gum can be a great alternative if your children can’t brush their teeth right after eating candy. Like food, sugar-free gum increases the production of saliva. Even better, sugar-free gum with xylitol has been shown to reduce tooth decay.
  5. This may go without saying, but make sure your children brush and floss after they eat their Halloween candy. Following up with a fluoride rinse made especially for children may offer an added dose of protection against cavities.

September 23, 2014

490822345Oral cancer is one of the most aggressive forms of cancer, affecting approximately 43,250 men and women in America every year. Early detection is key to successful treatment, and the most reliable way to diagnose the condition is via oral cancer screening at your local Highland Village, TX dentist’s office. That is why we offer a broad range of general and family dentistry services, including oral cancer screening.

The Importance of Oral Cancer Screening

When most people think of oral cancer, some of the first things that come to mind are risk factors like smoking, chewing tobacco, alcohol abuse, and genetics. While these do play a role in the development of oral cancer, many patients who fall victim to the disease do not engage in any unhealthy behavior. This is why it is so important to visit Dr. Thomas at least once every six months. With specialized diagnostic technology, he can determine the presence of abnormal cells in their earliest stages. If a problem is detected, we can take action right away to help improve the likelihood of successful treatment.

Even with routine oral cancer screening at your biannual dental visits, it is still important to keep an eye out for suspicious symptoms that may indicate the presence of a problem. These include:

  • Lumps or areas of thicker tissue anywhere in the mouth
  • Ulcers or unusual sores that won’t go away within two weeks
  • Persistent hoarseness and/or cough
  • Tingling or numbness
  • Pain in the jaw or teeth
  • Difficulty moving your tongue
  • White or reddish patches in the mouth
  • Unexplained bleeding

Back to School Dental Checkups: Prepare Your Child’s Smile for Excellence!

August 10, 2014

140303575Your little ones have had a blast all summer, and now it’s time to head back to school for another fun-filled year. Make sure that your child’s teeth and gums are in excellent shape for the coming semester with general dentistry checkups at Highland Village Family Dentistry in Highland Village, TX. Dr. Ryan Thomas and his caring, experienced team specialize in offering effective, personalized care for your entire family, including preventive and general dentistry checkups and cleanings.

The Vital Importance of Back to School Dental Checkups

At your child’s general dentistry checkup with Dr. Thomas, we will take the time to thoroughly assess the health of each and every tooth, checking for the earliest signs of damage and decay. We will also evaluate your child’s gum health, offering suggestions and tips regarding good home hygiene as we go. Because we believe in building lasting partnerships with our youngest patients and their parents, you’ll always be kept apprised of your child’s oral health status. If we do find anything of concern, we’ll work with you to develop an effective treatment plan that fits your child’s needs and your lifestyle.

In order to prevent tooth decay (the most common childhood disease in America), we may recommend preventive measures like fluoride treatments and/or dental sealants. Sealants help protect teeth from invasive bacteria that cause decay, and fluoride remineralizes enamel to strengthen each tooth. Checkups like these also help to foster a lifelong love of good oral health, ensuring a bright future for your child’s smile.
